Well, good morning America. Good to have you with us. Bill Martinez here along with doctor Michael Butler, is just about six minutes after the top of the hour. Michael, how are you. I'm going very well, Bill, Thanks for having me. It's always my pleasure to be here. Well, we appreciate the time. Doctor Butler's public policy analyst, economics expert, and a professor of finance at Stockton University in New Jersey. Well, let's review a little over a year, the first year of the Donald Trump administration. And I'll tell you it's enough that his hair is on fire, but he's lighting the hair on fire of all the Democrats that are just overwhelmed by all the victories that Donald Trump keeps doing in spite of all their resistance.

0:57 Right yeah, I mean, if you looking at it from an economic standpoint, I mean, things really couldn't have gone any better. He put in the tariffs, and everybody got very nervous about what the inflationary impact with that of that would be. Many economists were fearful that it would drive inflation up and it could probably push the economy into recession. Well, exactly the opposite has happened the economy, which was kind of stuck in a two percent growth rate really for the last decade, except for twenty twenty one when we rebounded from the pandemic and shot up a little more. But under normal conditions, we've had pretty slow growth for really a decade or more.

1:46 Yeah, but was it, Michael, Let me ask you this, because it seems that democratic policies had kind of put a metaphorical governor on our economy. I mean, to the point that even Barack Obama said, you know, he thought that, you know, was that Donald Trump was illucinating to think that he could do three, four or five percent because he said the best, he said, you'd be lucky to do two percent. Right, So that really tells that's a tell for me to say that the system had been set up in such a way to limit the natural growth of our economy. Using the democratic policy. So President Trump came in and changed that. So the first quarter of this year we had negative growth left over from the buying policies. But then when Trump put his policies. In the second quarter grew at three point eight percent. The third quarter grew at four point three percent. The fourth quarter data we don't have yet because the government shut down. It'll be over four point three percent. And my forecast for twenty twenty six is GDP growth in excess of five percent for the year. I also see the inflation rate coming down.

2:59 It was two point nine when Trump entered office. It's two point seven now. I think it'll be down to two percent by the end of December, which is the target that the Federal Reserve sets. One of the reasons, or maybe the big reason for this is tax policy. You know, Trump extended the twenty eighteen tax cuts, added a few more things to it. No tax on tips, no tax on overtimes until security tax. So that'll help stimulate the economy. Now, normally, when you do that in this environment, you say, well, if you stimulate the economy you have inflation, you're going to make inflation worse. And why isn't that going to happen this time? Because the tax policy Trump has put in is a supply side policy, where it encourages business to increase output. When you increase output, you put downward pressure on price, and the economy is growing.

3:58 How is he going to do that or how did he do that? So when business makes an investment, the IRS says you can recover your capital in some number of years. Machinery typically eight to ten years, factories twenty five years. So you only get a portion of your capital back every year for as long as the IRSAs now. This year, if you make an investment, you can expense the whole investment this year, so you can recover all of your capital this year. I think that's going to set off a tremendous investment boom. You'll see companies building factories. It's already started, companies building factories, expanding, adding more machinery and capacity. That increase in supply will put downward pressure on price and allow our economy to grow. I'm extremely optimistic about the economy going forward this year.

4:54 And I'm keeping my eyes open, doctor Butler on the Democrats, because they're you know, they're getting frustrated because they see all this money and growth in the economy doing so well, and the Democrats thinking the way they think. They say, hey, that doesn't belong to you, and they want they want their viig out of that growth, don't they. They do, But this is Trump and his policies are geared up for individuals to have the freedom to do what they want. Business has the freedom to do what they want, and then for individuals to have responsibility for themselves rather than social responsibility and limited freedom that we had in the last term. Once we do that, once we allow people to say, hey, go for whatever you want to go for. As Ronald reaganback said back in eighty four, you know, he passed his tax cuts and people saying, well, should we try something or not? And his famous words were.

5:55 Go for it. Yeah, exactly. In eighty four, the GDP grew it seven point four percent after the eighty two tax cuts. I don't think will be that good, although we may, but I think we'll at least hit the five percent. As long as the Democrats don't get in the way of this, this should come about. Yeah, they can't. They can't help themselves. Michael, So, I think business. I think the American people need to be aware of their interference because they like the system the way it is now, because they've got it rigged. They know the rules of the game, and they get their money. Like I said, they're getting their viig off all this taxpayer money. And now what Trump is doing, he's revolutionizing the whole system, and it's it's in the process of redefining itself, which will really create this golden age of America that everybody could benefit on. And I think they need to really hold this in their precious hands in such a way that they don't allow the Democrats to come in and take over and put a stick in the spokes of this very progressive and I mean it in a positive way, progressive economy here.

7:06 Yeah, So what the Democrats are going to say, especially we're coming up to the midterms, is, look, the economy is doing well, but these wealthy people are getting wealthier, and they're not paying enough of their income in taxes, and it's creating a lot of income inequality. So they're going to start pushing more social programs for the lower income. And how do you pay for that have to raise taxes on the highest income earners. That's actually very counterproductive because when you raise taxes on the wealthy, you destroy capital formation. In other words, you take away some of the investment capital that they would have spent because now they have to pay taxes they would have spent and that will cause the economy to grow. So by overtaxing the wealthy, you're really slowing economic activity down. But that's really the only thing they have to complain about because everything will look good, just like in twenty twenty, everything looked great. Now this pandemic came about and ruined everything.

8:10 But from an economic standpoint, they wouldn't have been able to beat Trump. He was doing so well. He's doing even better. Well, and that's why they had to cheat, you know, to win the election. In my humble opinion, but look at what you just shared with us. Is not theoretical. This is empirical, right, I mean, historically, this is what happens. And I'm telling America you need to wake up and increase your economic IQ here so you understand what Donald Trump is giving you, what the Republican Party could potition you, because I think even the Republican Party needs to understand this as well, because they're fighting Trump in certain places. Right.

8:50 Yeah, Fortunately he was able to get the big bill passed in July, just barely, but he had to do a lot of arm twisting and your right through a lot a lot of people. Then a Republican party that says, hey, you're keeping taxes low for the wealthy. I don't know how this is going to play out. And he convinced them that not only we'll play out well for everybody, but it will help the economy grow and will finally be able to hit higher growth numbers. Now when we have high growth, Jo Webb. I guess the rallying cry after this first year and the data is in. You know Trump has been right on just about everything. Michael, Yes, he has.

14:19 Some of the things he says, Look, I'm a free market economist. When he started saying tariff this and tariff that, I got a little bit nervous because tariffs add to the cost of the product and it could be inflationary. Turns out it hasn't been. Most of the tariff has been picked up either by the supplier or the middleman. Very little of it has been pushed onto the consumer. And I know that because the inflation rate is coming down, not going up. He's also said, which I think is marvelous, every new baby that's born, every American citizen that's born, he's going to give them one thousand dollars. It goes into He's a little vain. He calls it the Trump Account, but he's going to do an account that you can put money in every year up until you're eighteen years old.

15:09 And you know, if you're ten or twelve and your aunt says I want to give you fifty dollars for your birthday, you'll say, well, don't buy me something stupid. Put it in my Trump account. I can see on my phone. Every time you put money in, the values go up. So when people turn eighteen, depending on how much they put in they'll have thousands of dollars, tens of thousands of dollars, and they can do three things with it. Help pay for your education, start a business, or use it as a down payment for a house. All the American dream. He's reviving the American dream. And I think too, all this trend of young people going towards socialism, mostly because they're influenced in school and through college, they're going to say, hey, wait a minute, I don't think this is so bad this capitalism. I put a thousand dollars in, we put a little more in every year.

16:00 I'm a up to seven thousand dollars here. And you know, I just read Apple and came out with a new iPhone. They reported billions something in profit. I look at I have a tenth of a share of Apple. It's just one up in value fifty dollars. So they're going to see this and it's good for them. It will create opportunity. The government really has a responsibility to make sure there's opportunity available for every well prepared American. So if you turn eighteen and you have this big want of cash they've been saving up, say well, I want to go to college. My parents can't afford it. Well here's a help. You know, I'm to start a business, but how I'm ever going to raise capital, Well here's a help to do that. Eventually, I graduate from college, I'm looking to buy a house. Well here's a little help for that.

16:46 So I think it's a marvelous thing that Trump did with these Trump accounts. Oh, I think it's outstanding. And plus on top of that, Michael, you've got businesses that are saying, hey, look at this is going to help with employee retention. I'm you know, I'm investing in, you know, a father's child and putting money into their Trump account. I mean, what does that make my company look like? It looks like that they care about their employees, They care about their employees family. It builds a better employer employee relationship. At least a dozen companies have already said will match thee thousand dollars, so they now start with two thousand dollars. And I think it's good for the company.

17:30 It's good for the employee, and it's good for the for the overall economy. It's a real good thing. Trump keeps coming up with these ideas. Seven o'clock tonight, he's going to announce the Trump RX drug drug accounts. It'll work like a good RX. I don't if it's good or X before, but he's negotiated lower prices on tens of drugs that are historically very expensive. Doesn't work with insurance companies now eventually it will. But he's doing everything. People say, Look, I want to stay healthy. I know my health insurance is a lot and when I need a prescription drug, even if it's covered by my insurance, there's a big deductible I have to pay, and so I have to pay out a pocket. It's a lot of money. This is going to help in that area.

18:16 Trump is going around finding every major problem and saying, let's do something about it. Well, the Democrats talk theoretically about affordability, they're the ones that created the problem for affordability. Trump is actually providing solutions here. Michael, Yes, he is. And if you look at last year, for the first time, and I don't know how many more years, wage increases were greater than price increases. So now you're really getting an increase in wage and an increase in buying power. During the Biden years, he got a wage increase, but the inflation was more. I don't even have enough to cover what I've been buying, let alone expanding my standard of living and gone down. What Trump has done from an economic standpoint is marvelous, and what the rest of the things he's done also marvelous.

19:07 The thing that I'm a little disappointed in is with Congress is that they see all this stuff. I mean, their their first hand, whether you're a Republican or Democrat, and you're seeing the benefit that has to the American people. Why aren't they codifying this stuff? Why is that Trump has to continue to do this by executive order by most part instead of getting behind this. I mean, he's created this positive wave that, you know, the American people could say, you know what, I can start to like politicians again because they're looking out from my you know, my best interests and they are hesitant to do this. What's going on? You know, I'm not sure that the Democrats and the Republicans have such a thin majority, especially in the House of Representatives, and no matter what Trump does, the Democrats will be against it.

19:59 Right. The joke is, well, suppose he found a cure for cancer. You'd be against that because you're going to put all the oncologists out at work or something exactly, so they just start again. So he's got to get every Republican. The problem is, you got a couple of Republicans Massey in the House, he just doesn't like Trump and votes against him. He got a couple in the Senate Murkowski, Collins, ran Paul even a little bit. They just vote against the things he's he's trying to do. He needs a larger majority. Historically in the midterms, the sitting president does poorly. But I'm hoping that'll be changed. Why, I think by June July, you'll see everybody will say, wow, the inflation rates down, the economy's going everybody has money, and everybody's going to be in a good mood because it's a two hundred and fiftieth birthday of the country, and it's gonna be all kinds of parties and we're patriotic and good and I'm hoping that helps carry the Republicans to victory in November.

20:54 Well, the other thing that he's doing is he's campaigning. Unlike previous president. He's going out there and he's saying, hey, look at he's got to protect his agenda and his mission and all the accomplishments. Because if the Democrats take over, they take over the House, it's impeachment city. It's going to be a mess. And they've already said as much. So you know, they've got the impeachment templates already ready to roll out. And you know, so what kind of government are we going to pay for? Then? You know, we want two years of this kind of stuff that's ridiculous. Trump wants to try to prevent that his name is not on any of the ballots in the mid term in November, So he's going to campaign like his name's on the ballot and people want to go to vote, let's say, hey, Trump is on this. Trump one wants this.

21:41 So he's hoping, and I hope he's right that this carries him the victory and builds the majority in both the House and the Senate. Then for the last two years, will really be able to get some more things done, even though what he's done the first year is miraculous, I think. Yeah, And again, we just got to codify these things to where it's in law. So even like the situation, we still haven't heard from Scotus yet regarding the tariffs. You know, they could submarine that, and I'm going worse Congress. Congress needs to do something about it. And I think maybe Scotus, just maybe, just in my own thought, Scotus is saying, let's see if Congress does something. If they do something, then we don't have to chime in. It'll be a moot issue. Right, it could be. This is a very difficult decision for them to make. The legal scholars I've talked to said they thought they were going to come down on the side against President Trump and against the tariffs. I hope they're wrong. I hope they realize that Trump has used the tariffs not just to fix the trade deficit, correct a lot of economic inequalities, not just to expand the economy, but he uses it as a bargaining chip to end wars. Look at these wars and Trump said, look, if you don't end this thing, I'm to put tariffs on everybody won't sell anything in the US. You know, suddenly thirty year wars are getting resolved. So it's a tool Trump needs. If the Supreme Court takes away from them, it's going to create some problems.

23:10 Yeah, well, we'll have to wait and see. But again, my encouragement to Congress is you know, support the president, support these ideas. I mean, some of these ideologues, like you say, Mkowski and Ren Paul and others messy. I mean, what's your point. I mean again, even like the Democrats, like we talked about earlier, Michael is like, look at all these good things that are being done for the country. Don't you care enough about your own constituency or is it so much about power and control and about yourself and your own arrogance that you can't think about enough of your own constituency to support them and give them a leg up and let them, you know, let them, you know, celebrate this golden age that is coming, whether they like it or not.

23:54 Right, exactly, the Democrats just have the wrong message. Even when they're running. They're not campaigning to say, hey, we have a better idea Trump's doing. We have a better idea. All they're saying is not Trump. Doesn't matter what the idea, as long as it's not not Trump. Now, they get some success with that, mostly because the media is behind them. Ninety six percent of what they report is anti Trump. Yes, it's very difficult for Trump to have to fight fight that, but Look, he did it, and he won the presidential election. He did it, and he pushed what he had to do through Congress, not as much as we like, but he got a lot done. He's got one more hurdle here. He's got this mid terms. He's got to make it so the Republicans keep or build their majority in both houses. Of course, they'll have the presidency.

24:44 Then he doesn't have to worry about re election for himself. He can just go out and do whatever he thinks is right and get the Congress to go along with it. So I hope he can pull this off in the fall. If not, like you say, it'll be a very difficult situation. I'll tell you well, we got Super Bowl around on the corner. This is why they've been more oh and hum of recent years. And of course with Bad Bunny, who doesn't like America already said that he'll never perform in America. But I guess for some reason, somehow, in his lack of consciousness, doesn't realize that San Francisco is part of America. I guess.

29:54 Well, on some levels, San Francisco doesn't feel like America anymore, I guess, But but you know, follow the money that it seems to be the usual motivation. Yeah, without a doubt. So looking forward to a fun time regardless, and we know what to do with halftime. You can turn over to turning points. It's the All American halftime show, and it's the alternative. It's not the first time this has happened, by the way, I mean in history, there's been several alternatives for the halftime show because people just said, hey, this is not what I want my kids to see, and they turned the dial during the halftime show in order just to keep it safe.

30:35 But the lineup they're going to have Kid Rock, Bradley, Gilbert Lee, Bryce, and Gabby Barrett, which is, you know, kind of cool because these are names that we know about and songs that most of us know. And I was sharing with some guys the other night, doc that you know here, I was in LA for many years and you know, around the Grammys, and back in those days in the seventies, I knew most of the artists. I mean I could pronounce their names. I was staying. But since then I hardly know anybody. And and to me, which screamed out so brilliantly at this year's Grammy's because it was it was so demonic and I didn't catch it. I I purposely stayed away from it. But just reading about it and seeing some of the video highlights, low lights, call them what you want, Uh, it just seemed very demonic, except when, uh, when Jelly Roll came on. What did you see that? That that profession of faith. I mean, here they are, they're celebrating Satan and evil and everything like that, and Jelly Role says, hey, man, it's about Jesus.

31:39 I don't care. It's it's not about any politic political force. It's Jesus. Jesus and the Bible is what saved me, you know when I was in a what a six by eight cell and uh, you know it was Jesus who transformed. I mean it was it was a testimony. And I recommend that everybody, everybody get their hands on that and read that. And anyway, I did want to talk about this big award, two million dollar award to this girl who was sixteen years old at the time, doc and she was convinced because that was the threatening thing at the time. Oh, you got to transition because you're going to be a psychological back at basket occasi, you're going to kill yourself. Well, she got awarded two million dollars, which I think that you know, everybody got away very cheaply on this situation for pushing a double mastectomy on this young girl who now at twenty two greatly regrets that decision.

32:32 Well, that's not the only thing that's involved in gender quote gender transitioning. And so the bottom line is brainwashing is a common everyday term. It's real, and children their brains are not fully developed until they're in their early twenties. That's been proven twenty five thirty years ago. And so you're taking your they are praying on the vulnerable, and they are bombarding them with abnormal thoughts which will have repercussions for the. Rest of their lives exactly.

You know, it really brings us down. And yeah, it helps us kind of member what it is all about, you know, merit and hard work and these core values of what makes America great and what makes us all great because we're making the image of God. And I just want to encourage uh, you know football as an organization, as a profession, Roger Goodell and everybody is stay away from the politics. I mean, there ought to be that that hard you know, that hard line rule, Michael Jordan rule, that that Michael Jordan, you know, he

And yeah, there's a wisdom to understand that the platform of the NFL or the Olympics has been created by the National Football League for those players, and by the Olympic committees of every country to hold the Olympics. And the platform is for competition and the human spirit of collegiality and competition and teamwork and you know, even you know, the the amazing camaraderie of teams after the game. Exactly they fought all game long and now they're hugging in the middle by the same token. An athlete or a coach is told by his team, you have to stay out of trouble off the field so that you protect the brand that's paying you a lot of money. And that matters a lot. But they are individuals, they are citizens.

But today, the boldness that Tim Tebow expressed getting down on his knee, his thorough comments about Jesus Christ being his identity and his Lord, there's more of that than ever before. Mike McDonald the coach for the Seahawks, and we used to see this from coaches. He said, in a humble way, I really believe instead of going into business, I believe God called me to be a coach, and I listened to him and I thank him. We are so incredibly blessed.

What they're doing is they're deflecting the incredible glory, praise, adulation that's coming to them. And they're being honest, yes, and they feel like I can't be honest if I don't first say, first, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My identity is not in football.

So, so what is focus on the family, you know, in dealing with you know, Valentine's Day and how to make it memorable? And and let me be clear at the outset that I'm not speaking as I'm I'm not a marriage therapist. I'm not I'm just a guy who's married and I have. You know, the reason that I'm doing interviews on this is that I, you know, my wife and I have learned a few things about what can make a really memorable Valentine's Day and it doesn't have to cost two hundred dollars a piece to do it, and that you know, those are kind of the things that I've been talking about to guys like you in the last week or so.

Well, the fact of the matter is is if anybody's been married, I think they have something to say on the issue because there is some practical experience and so obviously you and your wife have developed some golden nuggets that could be of value to the rest of us, you know, because I always appreciate people's you know, unique ideas about how to you know, make a memorial a memorable Valentine's Day without you know, breaking the budget. Yeah, and I'll share the one that my wife and I use, and we've been doing it now for we've been married for it'll be eight years. I'm sorry, nine years this year. Oh gosh, I got that wrong. Don't listen, Ray, It'll be nine years in May. And we've been doing this since we've been married. And it costs less than ten bucks bill. And here's what it is. I'm going to hold it up so people who are watching can see it. Here is this is a big mason jar.

And what we do we do this based on a year, So we started on the first of January, ended on December thirty first, but you can also start it on Valentine's Day. And here's what this is inside this mason jar. And it's a big masonjar. Look, it's as big as my head and that's not worth it's big. And what we do is we keep cards around and we write down as tough as we notice each other doing something well, doing something loving. You encouraged me in this, You forgave me for that. It was great how you interacted with this person from church and really showed the love of Jesus.

And here's why that's great because at the end of the year, and again you can do this started on Valentine's Day, Folks, next Valentine's Day, open them up, because we open them up and it two hours we will go through the cards, we'll forget some of the things that we wrote. Well, realize we wrote some of the same things about each other. And it's just a sweet, warm, beautiful, touching time. And it costs less than ten bucks. This jar is like three or four bucks and the car. I think I need a separate jar just for the forgiveness jar, because my wife extends an incredible amount of grace for me, and she's always forgiving me, and so I probably just need a separate jar for that.

Yeah, And we don't know what's in there until we open it up, and it is, it really is. Over the course of the time that we've done this, we discover things that we forgot. I mean, sometimes we'll read things it'll least two or three words when we're like, what was that? But the beauty is that it gets us talking about those things and it makes you intentional. What I love about this tradition is it makes you intentional about about catching your spouse doing something quote unquote right all the time, and you throw it in there and you don't forget about it. Because so many times life is so busy, Bill, so many times things can get past us, we'll forget things. Well, this never gets forgotten.

1:52:12 And we have going on nine years now of cards in the basement, preserved, saved so that we can go back and revisit those all the time because we want to. That for us is far better than flowers, far better than dinner. Not that you don't do those things, but this is where the real richness of celebrating any holiday. For us, it's the first of the year. It's our love throughout the ear. But you can adapt this to Valentine's Day very easily. Well, I bet it reminds you at times you may have forgotten an incident or something when you pull this up and all of a sudden you go, oh, that's right. You know I was a knucklehead, and you really you forgot me, and I noted, I noted that I kind of forgot about that.

1:52:56 Right, Yeah, I mean it leads to there's laughter, there's tears, there's forgiveness again, there's there's all all the emotions that drive a healthy marriage, come come to us through this. This is a great how'd you come up with the idea? You know, we're both writers, and uh we we like sending cards to each other and those kind of things. And it was a it was an opportunity to again just catch her, to not let moments that in the busyness of life can pass you by preserving them and talking about them. That is just you know, we were both inspired to do that. And we don't peek. And I have no idea what's in this jar right now?

If she opens up one it's mine, I'll read it to her. So we do it that way. We read our own notes to each other. Oh cool, No, very well done. Well, that's what a great idea. Do you realize how many marriages you probably have saved just with the Mason jar? Now, I'd like to mention how much money we saved. I mean, if the average couple's out there spending two hundred bucks or the average person join and bucks on Valentine's Day, now it's down to ten dollars.

1:54:24 Yeah. Well, And the thing about it, truly, it's the intentionality of looking for ways to bless your spouse. And one of the best ways to do that is the show appreciation. And yes, going out to dinners appreciation. Flowers are appreciation, and I'm not saying those things are wrong, but I thought, even before I was married Bill, I always thought that as a guy, I had it kind of easy because flowers. While I understand how much they mean to a woman, for on our ends, they're kind of easy. Right back in the day before the internet, we would just call up and order them, and it was a phone call. Now we just click on the on the computer for a bit and we send them there. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the intentionality of doing things a little deeper of I mean, one of the things that my wife and I have done. I'm sure you've heard of doctor Gary Chapman's book The Five Loves. Right, we took the tests, and our love languages are, of course exactly different. I'm a gifts and words of affirmation guy, and she's quality time and acts of service. So this right, words of affirmation are in this jar, but it's also quality time. It's also acts of service because I'm noting things.

1:55:34 She's noting things I did for her. I'm noting things she did for me, and it's it's a way to touch on those things that truly bring our hearts alive. Well. Telling about Gary Smalley's book, I mean, you know, like you say, you have knowledge and awareness of your wife's love language. So these notes that you're you're making, you're keeping that in mind as you write that note, because you know that these are the words or the expressions they are more most meaningful to her. Right, Yeah, absolutely, I mean, she's going to be more moved by a note that I put in there that says it was so great how you helped this person at church do this thing, because that's her doing an act of service, which means a lot to her. She's going to write, you're such a great guy. You know you are kind you are because I'm a words of affirmation guy. Or she'll put like one hundred dollar billion here because I'm a gifts guy too. No, we haven't done that yet, but I'll bring that up the next time we go through these. But yeah, I mean, it's it's just one of the ways, but it encompasses all those other things that create intentionality. That's what you want to get, not just on Valentine's Day, but three sixty five.

It's not the pre written stuff. It's stuff that we write. It's stuff that we notice. It's stuff that that moves us and if it moves me to write a note about it, to Kelly. It will move Kelly when I read that note to her when we go through the jar and it's fun. I mean, these things are jammed in there. It's like sand I mean, there are hundreds of cards in this at the end of day, and it really is. It's it's the richest two hours will spend in a year many years because of the things that we've taken the time to notice each other do and write.
