Glad you could join us. Bill Martinez here just about six minutes after the top of the hour, and we've got the American Minute creator, the one and only Bill Fetter with us. Bill. How you doing. It's great to be with you. Bill. Hey, always good to be talking with you. I'm excited to talk about our two hundred and fiftieth anniversary. In the midst of everything that is going on right now. Bill, it's like the Yin and Yang. We've got quite the contrast happening in our country right now. We've got socialists, we've got communists in our government. I mean, you know, even Bernie Berney Senter said the other day, goes, well, if the truth be known, you know, we have Nazis in our government. Oh that's good to know.

0:55 Yeah. Yeah, And well, people forget that if you were to stretch all the governments out from one side to the other, it's basically total government on one side and no government on the other side. Total government power concentrates into the hands of fewer and fewer people. Ultimately one who rules as a dictator, and they rule through fear. They can ultimately take away your life. The other side is no government. That would be chaos unless the people have virtue. And so that's where ancient Israel comes into the picture, and they when they came out of Egypt around fourteen hundred BC, it was the first instance of millions of people and no king, and it worked because every person was taught the law. It was like everybody downloaded a behavioral appy.

1:46 I thought, right, and then what motivates you to follow it is there is a God who is watching you and he wants you to be fair. He's going to hold you accountable in the future. So you have opportunity to steal. Nobody's around and you think God's watching. You want somebody to be fair. It's gonna on be a dounible. Maybe I should hesitate stealing and it creates something in your head called the conscience. And so that's what the Pilgrims and Puritans drew from ancient Israel, so much that the Puritan scholars were nicknamed Christian Hebraists because they studied this ancient heap. That's why they taught Hebrew at Yale and Harvard. James Madison graduated from Princeton in seventeen seventy one, he went back for another year justice study Hebrew. Wow. And he's the architect of our constitution, James Madison. And so this model predates the Romans. You know, Roman Republic predates the Athenian democracies. Around fourteen hundred BC is when Israel comes out of Egypt, and their system worked for four hundred years until their priests went woke, and the high priest eli his own sons are sleeping with women in the tent of meeting. And you have another levite with a graven image when the law says you're not supposed to have graven images. Another levite with a concubine, where the law says the levites to marry a version of his own tribe, and it turns into chaos, and they all go to Samuel the prophet, and they say, we want to be like the other countries.

3:02 We want a king. Why is this story important? The kings of Europe looked to the Bible for their authority, but they looked to the king Saul and after and the Pilgrims and Puritans that found the New England looked to the before King Saul part of the Bible, the Hebrew Republic, millions of people, everybody taught the law personally accountable to God to follow it. And so in New England you had pastors and churches founding cities, and this covenant form of government, the word for federal federal, it comes from the Latin word fadaeas, which means covenant. So we have a covenant form of government in America that was drawn from this before King Saul period of ancient Israel.

3:45 But in my books who is the king in America? I go through that it's we the peevile. But there's a great quote from Teddy Roosevelt, and he said, in no other place, and at no other time, has the experiment of government of the people, by the people and for the people been tried on so vast a scale as here in our own country. And so what were the other experiments while it? You know, the most common form of governments kings Nimrod, Pharaoh, Caesar, Kaiser, sultans are But you do have around, you know, five hundred or so BC you have the Athenian democracy with six thousand citizens and it works for a couple of hundred years until Alexander the Great's dad, Philip a Macedon, bribes a bunch of people in the city to betray their own city, and so Philip A Masadon conquers it. Rome had a republic, and it went on until Julius Caesar decided to make himself emperor, you know, king for life, a dictator for life, and it flipped. But so our founders looked back to these but they ultimately look back to ancient Israel. So some of the stories that I think are interesting. One is the Pilgrims. They were going to go to Virginia and submit to the king's government.

5:08 They get blown off course in a storm land in Massachusetts. They have no government because there's no buildings, there's no nothing, and they don't want to be lawless, and so they take their covenant church form of government and they make it their civil government. It's called the Mayflower Compact. We any presence of God covenant ourselves together into a civil body politic. One story with the Pilgrims is the first winner. There were one hundred and two of them. Half of them die. They probably wouldn't have made it another year until out of the woods comes as Indian that speaks to him in perfect English. His name Squanto right lo and behold. He had been kidnapped in England for a dozen or so years, learns the language, drops off back on the coast, only to find his tribes had died in a plague. And yet the next spring he comes out of the woods and he helps the pilgrims.

5:55 William Bradford said he was a special instrument sent of God for their good, beyond their expectation. I mean, that's definitely got to be classified as a maya, no question. Yeah, absolutely of a miracle, You're exactly right, go ahead. One that people aren't familiar with. There was a William Foster, and he was a sailor fisherman, and he sails out of the Boston Harbor in sixteen sixty nine and he's in the Atlantic and he gets captured by some Turkish Muslim pirates and taken to Morocco, and they send some people over there to try to rescue him, and the sultan said that as long as he's alive, no prisoner is going to be let go.

6:38 And so Cotton mether who was one of the Puritan leaders writes in his Magnalia Christie Americana, a book. He says, Godly Man of Charleston, mister Foster and his son were taken captain by Turkish enemies. Much proro was employed for the redemption. But when we were told that the bloody Prince mulay Rashid of Morocco said that no one would he set free in his lifetime, we gave up hope. Upon this reverend Elliot, he's known as the Apostle to the Indians. He prayed before his congregation. Heavenly Father worked for the redemption of that poor servant Foster. And if this Prince which detains him, will not dismiss him as long as he himself lives, Lord, we pray that he killed this cruel prince, and glorify thyself upon him.

7:22 Well lo and behold. Shortly after the Prince falls from his horse at Marrakesh, and he dies at the age of forty two, and Foster has let go comes back to America. Cotton Mather says, the poor captive gentleman quickly returns to us that had been mourning for him as a lost man, and brings news that the Prince which had hitherto held him, was come to an untimely death, by which means he was now set at liberty. It's like, okay, that's sort of an interesting uh right, exactly answered the prayer. You have the French and Indian War, that France had everything west of the Appalachians, and the British we're encroaching from New England west and this was causing a conflict. It's near Pittsburgh, the French and Indian War. The British are ambushed, about nine hundred get killed in George Washington is a colonel bringing messages back and forth from General Braddock, who gets killed, and Washington more or less is in charge, and he organizes a retreat and afterwards there's four bullet holes through his coat, two horses shot out from under him, and he escapes unhurt.

8:33 That's a miracle. He was twenty three years old. Had he not survived, where there wouldn't have been any Washington to. Lead us during the be our first president. Exactly. Then you have the Revolutionary War, and there's lots of stories there. I'll tell you what before we go into that, Bill, Let's go to quick break, and then we'll pick it up from there. We're now starting to get into the history of the Revolutionary War as we recount as the best we can in a short period of time, two hundred and fifty years of an exceptional history of the United States of America.

14:23 Right yeap, people aren't aware of the same Continental Congress that did the Declaration of Independence, which mentions God four times, they did a unanimous proclamation of fasting and prayer. Weirdness are recommend the seventeenth of May seventeen seventy six be observed as a day of humiliation, fasting in prayer, confess and bewill our manifold of transgressions, peace, God's righteous displeasure or sincere repentance, through the marriage and mediation of Jesus Christ, have pardoned and forgiveness. They rush a copy of That's out to Washington. He's in New York, facing the British troops who had filled up the Boston Heart Harbor. Excuse me, the New York Harbor. He orders his troops to observe the day of fasting. Continental Congress ordered fried of the seventeenth to be observed as a day of fasting, humiliation, and prayer. Humbly to supplegate the mercy of Almighty God.

15:13 The General commands all officers and soldiers to base trict obedience to the orders of the Continental Congress. And so the battle is. The British find a loyalist who lead the ten thousand British troops through Jamaica Pass to attack Washington from behind. On August twenty seventh, seventeen seventy six. Three thousand Americans get killed, only three hundred British. And this is the entire American Army. There's no second string. If it's over here, it's over And America is just another British colony like India. But Washington, the sunsets and he's pinned up against the water with these British behind him, and the British ships in the harbor, and he decides to get every boat he can find and start firing his troops across the East River to Manhattan Island. And they're doing it all night long, as quiet as they can. And then his Major Bent Talmage, his chief of Intelligence rights. As the dawn of the next day approach, those of us who remained in the trenches became very anxious for our own safety.

16:19 When the dawn appeared, there were several regiments still on duty at this time, a very dense fog began to rise off the river and settle in a peculiar manner over both encampments. I recollect this peculiar, providential occurrence perfectly well. So very dense was the atmosphere that I could scarcely discern a man at six yards distance. We tarried until the sun had risen, but the fog remained as dense as ever. Well. Washington was on the last boat that left. The fog lifts the British charge and Owen's there there was the last chance the British had to capture the entire American army all at once. Washington later says, the hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in the course of the war that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith. And then lots of another battle is the Cowpins.

17:02 Toward the end of the war. The British have a Colonel Tarleton, this twenty six year old butcher who at the Battle of Waksaw killed three hundred Americans who were in the process of surrendering. They're lifting up their arms and his men on horseback with their sabers are stabbing him and anyway, so Tarleton is chasing the American general Daniel Morgan, and he's got an army with wagons going really slow, and so he can't outrun him. So he decides to put his army in front of a river, which looked foolish because you never want to fight. A battle in front of a river. And the Colonel Tarleton has been riding for twenty four hours with his light cavalry and he sees him there and he charges.

17:43 And the. Americans had two groups, the militia, who are guys off the farm known for shooting a couple of times and then running away, and then the Continental Soldiers who would not run away, and so in the front. Of the militia. So here's this Colonel Tarleton. He's charged Jingi's seeing these militia and they start running away. He's chasing them. Well, they just ran in a circle around the hill. But behind the militia were the Continental soldiers, and they act like they were going to run away. Then suddenly they stop, they turn, they lower the rifles and at point blank range they kill a hundred of the British Light cavalry, and then the ones that circle around surprise him and capture eight hundred. And the Colonel Tarlton rides off, and when the General Cornwalls hears about it, he was leaning on his sword.

18:33 He leans so hard hard a sword snapped in half. So Cornwalls decides to chase Daniel Morgan who's met up with Nathaniel Green and they're fleeing and they cross the Cataba River and then the British show up. But before the British can cross, there's a flash flood and the river's flowing is over banks, and they're delayed. But then the British finally cross, and they're chasing the Americans to the Yadkin River. The Americans crossed, the British show up before they can cross, another flash flood, and they're delayed, and then they finally get across, and then they chase the Americans to the Dan River, and the Americans cross, and the British show up and they're watching him get out the other side. But before the British can cross, another flash flood and the British Commander Henry Clinton rise Here the Royal Army was again stopped by a sudden rise of the waters which had only just fallen. Almost miraculously let the enemy over, Who could not else have you looted Lord Cornwallis's grasp, So close was he upon their rear, And so then you have even Benedict Darnold was about to betray west Point. He was wounded. He was the hero from the Battle of Saratoga, and he was over passed over for some promotions. And he had married the daughter of a loyalist, and she keeps nagging him.

19:48 If you were working for the British. They to appreciate you. And so she puts Benna Darneld in touch with a spy and they meet, they agree to betray west Point and and the spy is going back to the British territory dressed as a civilian, and some Americans spot him and search him once, search him twice. They're about to let him go, and then they get the idea to make him take off his boot. And in his stocking he had a map a west Point and he couldn't explain it. So they said, well, let's just take you back to West Point. Explain it to our commanding General Bennett Darnold. And it's like Bennett darnelld and he hears that, hey, we caught a spy. He gets in his boat and a British boat and flees, and the American General Nathaniel Morgan said treason. And the blackest eye was yesterday discovered.

20:36 General Arnold, who commanded at west Point, was about to give the American cause a deadly wound, if not fatal stab. Happily, the treason had been timely discovered to prevent the fatal misfortune, the providential train of circumstances which led to its discovery amidst the most convincing proof that the liberties of America are the object of divine protection. But that was a miracle in American. Yeah, I mean, and that's the Bill, as you go back in the early history of this great American idea and answer to prayer. You know, the pilgrims for twelve thirteen years praying, you know, for a place where that they could worship God with liberty. And here God's hand is on them from the very beginning, and it continues.

21:18 We've got about two and a half minutes left here. So what's our takeaway? Just even from this early segment, Bill, fast forward, here we are two hundred and fifty years later plus, and we're about to celebrate this incredible birthday of this gift that God has given us. Yeah. Well, the word testimony has a meaning in the Hebrew of Lord do it again. In other words, you share these stories of faith. It bills faith in the hearer, and it says, Okay, well, God, you did it then, then then then and maybe you can do it now. And I'm gonna trust you to do it now. And so we need that we need to remind ourselves that we've bet in these crises, we've turned to the Lord and we've had courage and God has delivered us.

22:03 And we're facing crisis today. Financial and you know, thirty nine trillion dollars worth of debt, the Chinese buying up property, the AI, the censorship of the Islamists. There's lots of threats now. The fraud, not to mention the fraud, corruption, breakdown in morality, yes, at every turn. Bill, you know our government is compromised and corrupt. Yeah, election fraud. But God is always willing to turn things Jeremia eighteen. He said, if I pronounced judgment on a nation and they repent, I won't judge them. And so all repentance is individual. It's not somebody out there repenting.

22:44 It's me, It's you. Whi's every listener that we returned to our first love, to return to the Lord and praying, reading his word and fellowship with him and being involved in church. And so you know, I mean, if you were God and you wanted to populate heaven, wouldn't you want to fill it full of people who like wanted to be with you? And which means you'd have to give them a choice not to be with you. And so this earth is the choosing spot for all the rest of eternity. And so in our crises, we turned to the Lord. That's our history and heritage in the Bible in America, and we remind ourselves so that the Lord will do it again. A crisis can be a good thing, right, Bill, Yeah, it's most people don't turn to Christ in good times. We should, but it's in times of crisis that people turn to Christ. And it's in times of crisis that God raises up leaders. And whether it's a Gideon and David and Moses, or at George Washington, or an Abraham Lincoln or are you and me yeah, or.

Hey, maybe you can help us understand what's going on with the voting public, I mean, the consent of the government. It seems that all these socialists are getting an incredible amount of ballots in their favor, and the policies they're promoting are just flat out antithical to this democratic republic and the Constitution, which oh yeah, by the way, we're about ready to celebrate two hundred and fifty years of freedom, right, and it's like we've got an increasing number of people that say, well, the heck with freedom, I want to be enslaved.

28:26 Well, you go back to Woodrow Wilson, leader of the Democratic Party, the first Democratic could get elected in the twentieth century, and he thought the Constitution was a mistake. It didn't give the government the power that government should have to run everybody's lives. And the Democratic Party has since then, I mean it used to be the party of Jefferson at one point, if you remember, has continually moved and by the left, I mean to more decisions will be made by government, fewer by you, fewer by your family. Institutions that get in the way of the monopoly that the government would like to have over decision making.

29:11 Like churches that have their own ideas about things. They need to beat down those structures, private structures, religious structures and strengthen the state. And the Democratic Party's been doing that over time. That at the same time you had the rise of socialism and communism in Europe and around the world, and it was Democrat elected officials who seemed to be the most susceptible to oh, Russia is not a problem, we should give them money. Before the Soviet Union collapsed, the leading Democrat and the House wanted to give them twenty six billion dollars to bail them out.

29:54 This is after everybody knew exactly what Soviet Union was and what communism was. You can't even claim to be ignorant by that point. We said no when they went bankrupt. So this is the Democratic Party going increasingly statused increasingly big government. Sometimes they set up structures where you know, the private sector will work with the government to push people around labor unions, trial lawyers, and more and more. They just want to bring it into the government and where they would sort of reach around and push you to do something or subsidize you to do something. Now they're a little more just tell you to do. It right exactly. Well, they've been in bolden because you mean, this battle has been going on for hundreds of years, groverers, you know, and it's driven by those who have money, you know, the secret cabal that are really the lever pullers of the bureaucracy. I mean, we keep blaming the government, but actually there's a power force behind that that's controlling our government. And it's not we the people.

30:57 Is it. No, it's not. But again, you could put again a bunch of a lot of people together, or a bunch of money together, if you didn't have a government capable of using its power, its monopoly power, to make people do things. A bunch of rich people sitting in a corner thinking up thoughts wouldn't matter if they were just imagining what if we had this? But when you do have a government that is big enough that absorbs, you know, twenty percent a fifth of everything that Americans make, and more than that when you realize some of it they borrow. The government has gotten large. When we were colonies, and for one hundred years after that, we spent Americans and colonists people who weren't yet Americans because they were technically British subjects. I guess we spent two percent of our incomes on government two percent. The British in London spent twenty percent. And when the British wanted us to pay more for their government, we started shooting at them and made them go away. So for one hundred years it was two percent, and went up during the Civil War, but then back down again. We had an income tax for the Civil War and then it went away. It wasn't until Woodrow Wilson and the progressives they called themselves progressives back then, came up with theories about how the government should have more power. And it's really a mistake

32:30 that the executive branch doesn't have all this unfettered power. The constitution gets in the way of what they want to do. Then it was a living document which meant, oh we have a constitution. It just means whatever we say it. It doesn't affect anybody. That tendency is a bigger deal. In big cities, which are already very socialized, the state is very power. State doesn't have quite as much power over people live in suburbs and rural areas because they drive cars, they don't go on subways, and you know exactly where they are at all times, and you don't have as much control over them. They tend to be armed, which always annoys governments. So it's I think it is interesting and sad, but in some ways helpful.

33:18 When somebody stands up and says, here's who I am, and here's what I intend to do to you. You really want to listen to them. But you know, I guess they've convinced enough people, as you say, because this has been going on. You know that you get these power elites that somehow think that they know better and they have more intelligence than the cumulative intelligence of the rest of us.

But even intellectuals who went over Paul Robson, you know, there were people who came up to them and said, you don't know what's going on, and they wouldn't, you know, they wouldn't listen to people who are warning them what was actually happening in the Soviet Union.

At least with the New Deal under FDR, it could be wasteful, there was fraud and all that stuff, and yes it was political, but you had to have a job to get Social Security and that sort of thing. When they said, if you don't have a job, if you refuse to work, if you decide not to work, then you get aid, defamilies with dependent children and all these government programs. And that ended up locking a whole collection of people out of work. And then the Democrats go, oh, you can't do that, and sometimes they'd be racist about you can't do that because you're such and such. Really, that's pretty disgusting to say to somebody. So we will help you, but so you just vote for us. Sit down, shut up.

You know, they want to blame white people, and they want to blame other people, but they're really they really don't want to blame the people that created this, which is these government elites, these bureaucrats, who have really reduce them to their lowest common denominator. And I think if you want to frustrate somebody, tell them that they're less than what they can be, and not only that, but put them in a situation where they're a round peg in a square hole. This is what you have right now in America where nine out of ten people aren't happy with the job that they're assigned with right now because they could be doing better, but they're restricted in one form or another.

Unfortunately, those that are addicted and they have been formed by this, they're like the baby elephant, right that is restrained as a baby with a chain, and then later on when they become adult, they don't need the chain anymore. When we reduce taxes, reduce regulations, make energy more available to everybody, make it easier for people to get jobs and become self contained and to run their own lives, then we free people from the effective slavery that the left wants to put them in uh and then they become regular, you know, they become Americans, and they have agency over their own lives. And the Democrats are terrifying of that. They're always trying to grab people and drag them back into the gutter. And so you can't and tell them things like you can't do that. Yes they can, right exactly, And my goodness, with freedom comes productivity, comes joy and happiness. You know, the Democrats don't want you to be happy, that's clear. And it's not only Democrats, it's the operatives. I mean, listen to the mainstream media how they report what's going on with the Trump administration.

The left is losing this fight at the end of the day, as more people move into red states where the unions can't boss you around, where the trial lawyers can't sue you as easily, still too much of it, but as easily, where taxes are lower, where you have school choice, where you can homeschool, you have more control over your life, the government doesn't pick on people for having religious values, and all of those freedoms people move towards. People do not move towards the blue state they move away from the blue states. Yeah, another twenty years of that and the majority in the country that's in red states will be so large that Democrats will never be able to elect a president or a Congress unless they come back to the Constitution. They can do that. I mean, when you have enough failure and you can't win, they might even try freedom right.

And that's what's been lost is the Democrats, you know, can't agree with Republicans. Well, we also agreed two parties, one Constitution. Yes, people weren't going let's take away your right, let's end the Second Amendment, let's take away your right to keep in bear arms. The Democrat Party wasn't for that until recently.

Now, the Democrats find the idea of freedom of speech for people they don't like or disagree with to be horrific. They said, okay, kid, we'll break your company into pieces if you don't do this for us. And the head of Facebook Meta before Trump was reelected for the third time, he ran. I talked to him about this before that, the threats to him and his company and what they were going to do to them if, if, and not here's the only guy. I mean, a lot of this stuff going on. People had to know that. The companies, high tech companies had to know We're not going to hurt you if you have a free and open debate on things. And the Democrats keep looking over our shoulder. Go but if we're ever back in power, we will Oh yeah. I mean exactly. I mean that's the old term Grover. If you want to know what somebody will do, look at what they've done. And the deal is is they're on that road that there just doesn't seem to be much redemption or or even apology. It's it's a doubling down and an insistence that I mean, they're angry right now that they're not getting their way. And and you know, just like with anything, once you release that anger man, there's going to be all hell to be paid. And then what's going to happen to the persecutions that we experienced under four years with Biden? I mean, could you imagine how much work sick again?

51:02 It could get a lot worse. They were planning on are still planning to do much more. They're talking about every Democrat in the Senate has said that they would agree to pack the Supreme Court. No one of them is signed the support for just having the nine judges. They're talking about adding more. They're talking about adding hundreds more House members they think that would help them, which can be done by law. You can take the number of people from four uland thirty five up to five hundred and thirty five if you wanted to. I'm not sure that helps them, but they seem to think it does, meaning if they think it'll help them, they'll do it.

I get a kick out of them outraged at jerry mandering when I from Massachusetts, New England. There isn't a Republican congressman all of New England. That's five states. Okay, Massachusetts used to have two Republicans. Now they've gerrymandered to be none, Connecticut none, New York's getting towards none. And they've been doing this for years and we were unable to either stop them in those cases, nor did we actually say, you know what, if that's the way you're doing it, then I guess we should all play by the same rules. It's when we're playing catch up to their redistricting and jerry mendoring now again not going further than they did, less hard than they did, and still we can win with.

52:34 That, right exactly. And then of course we've got the population you know count coming up, right, so when that happens, that's going to have an effect on representation as well as you know. It expects we expect about eleven more congressional districts electoral votes to move from blue states to red states in the the twenty thirty two redistricting and coming up with a better as a result of the census that we're doing thirty and another ten years later, they expect another ten eleven, twelve congressional seats electoral college votes to move into Republican territory. So the Democrats are correct to panic, which is why some of them are swinging wildly and sounding crazy, because if they don't change the rules, they don't cheat, they will lose power because their ideas fail when you put them into practice.

53:36 Do you foresee a blue wave of Democrats moving more to the Republican Party? Individuals yes, party officials no, we no, no exactly, But a lot of the people who wanted to switch. In ninety four, two senators and five Democrat. Two Democrat senators five Democrat countries switched parties. They were only in Democratic Party because it was the majority party and that was as good as they could do from their seats and their states. They became Republicans. One from Alabama, one from Colorado. Yeah. Well, as we wrap things up here, Grover. One thing, in particular, the Save Act that has to be passed, right, I mean the fact that it's been lingering here. I know a lot of people are putting the blame on John Thune. You know the buck's got to stop somewhere right.

54:27 Well, because everybody's responsible for their own vote. Thune can't make anybody vote the other senators. But we do have a narrow majority. You could if every Republican voted, you could change that law and get it passed. I would like to see how quickly I can imagine if you did it, you could still have court cases and so on, which slowed things down in the Blue States. So I would very much like to hear somebody walk through how quickly could that be implement If you broke the filibuster, it's kind of like taking your shield off because the next time they're coming for you and shooting arrows eye you got nothing. Then. Now the question is maybe they and the filibuster themselves. They did try last time, they failed.

55:17 Two Democrats voted to no. Are there any Democrats who would vote know this time? Would? I think it's likely the Democrats could strip it out. But looking back, if we hadn't had the filibuster, you wouldn't have right to work, We'd all be forced into labor. And there are a number of things you can see going, oh my goodness, this could be really ugly. Step one, don't lose the majority in the Senate. We need to make sure that doesn't happen. And then you do have to look at the question of does it make sense to maintain the filibuster given the Democrat Party's willingness to change and break rules. Well, let me ask you one last question. Is there going to be any kind of maybe a firewall politically?

56:02 Just like you said, you know, you have so many people moving to Red states, and the blue states continue to run into problems financially, and guess what they come to the federal government, which you know, the red states are successful. They're not begging for money. You've got to New York, I mean, well, New York's in trouble, La Hawaii, the all these blue states that are just coming hat in hand because they've run their governments, their cities, their states so poorly, and they're asking red states to protect them and govern their. Action they do and red states have been funding blue cities in blue states and red states. Federal funds keep the Democrats in power in Houston and in Austin and in Dallas, for crying out loud. So there is My modest recommendation is the federal government should never write a check to a city. If you're going to put something out out into the country, hand it to the state and then the state can decide if we're gonna move welfare, as we did with aid to families with dependent children, to the states to decide that money went to the states.

How do you manage three hundred and fifty million people? Yeah? Well, and I mean you'd have a hard time, you know, right here in my little borough of Grove City, Pennsylvania, which has maybe maybe three hundred and maybe thirty five hundred people together. And I mean even in a situation like that and this was part of what you know, Yuri Maltsev and other Soviet ec economists used to say about the Soviet Union. Imagine a country of twelve time zones with you know, one hundred and fifty two hundred million people, and they would sit there in the Central Planning Bureau with this massive cattle catalog prices on all goods they had that they had to try to set and by the way, that yeah, this is like the nineteen sixties and seventies before computers, and it was just impossible to do it. And you Lovely vond These has famously said that, you know, only only the invisible hand of the free market you could do that.

The you know, the knowledge quote unquote of all the individual people and owners and business owners and everything else making individual decisions on a daily, minute by minute basis to determine what prices are. And this again is something that the left just doesn't understand. Yeah, this is how you earn thirty nine trillion dollars in debt. Paul, you know, really, you know you think about it. But anyway, we digress a minute only to you know, go down a little bit of a lane here. But I want to get back on talking about Pope Leo's first and cyclical letter. Tell us about that.

When in fact, when with my book on Pope Leo, one of the things that I predicted in the final chapter, as I said, I think his person cyclical will probably be on Ai And he telegraphed that to us on the day after his election. He spoke a little Spanish, mostly Italian, and a lot of Latin, and then the next day in English publicly, spoke English publicly for the first time, and he said there, I know people are wondering what I picked the name of Leo the fourteenth, and he said, well, I'm thinking of Leo the thirteenth, of course, and thinking specifically of his famous and cyclical Rareum Nobarnam on New Things, which talked about the new technologies of the day that would have been in eighteen ninety one, and how these new technologies are were replacing people on the assembly lines, you know, people farmers, factory workers, and causing massive unemployment, dislocation and really changing the way everything is. And he said, I see that now happening with AI. To the possibility of AI replacing medical workers, right, doctors, nurses and doct do you already have people kind of self.

Understands with the technologies of the age that Augustine couldn't conceive. Of something like the nuclear weapon. Yes, and so here we are today where you know, where the United States and fighting a war with Iran or Russia with Ukraine. Ukraine with Russia. You can fly over in the sky and and you know, drop bombs and do the things that you can with cruise missiles and with tanks and airplanes. It's an altogether different thing than Augustine's time when it was literal hand to hand combat.

Have, you know, among other things, you have to say that all diplomatic options have been exhausted, you had to have tried all means of getting the peace. I actually talked to Mike Pence about this, because Mike Pence is one of our fellows at Grove City College, and he said, he said, I could tell you in the first Trump term, we must have negotiated with the Iranians two hundred and fifty times, right, he said, we felt that we except that we exhausted all options, all peaceful options, that they just weren't buying it.

1:20:37 So in that sense, I think that's a just war doctrine that applies that they could check the box on. And another is that you're not supposed to target civilians right as well. And so which is why that Donald Trump's statement that first Tuesday of Holy Week after Easter Easter Week, when he made that statement about wiping out an entire civilization of people never to be brought back again. Well in regard to the Iranians. Well, whether or not he was bluffing or not, that's what prompted the Pope to come out and say that statements like that are quote truly unacceptable. It's according to just war doctrine. That's that's not something you're supposed to do.

1:21:17 Yeah. I think that everybody perceived and understood that statement according to their worldview. You know, for those that are pro Trump saw it as typical hyperbole. He didn't. I didn't see it as he meant the civilis that you know, the what ninety million people there in Iran. I think he was talking about the leadership. But regardless, you know, it's okay for the Pope to make that statement, but he but he needs to also make the put the statement against these uh, you know, these other people that are making statements, whether it's the Southern Poverty Law Center or Schumer or others that are you know, calling people Nazis and uh, you know, accusing turning point of being a hate I mean, you know stuff like that, that that's that's extreme, No, it isn't.

In fact, he said this to analyst Tagrit of Newsmax and the way back from the plane on the people plane on the way back from Algeria. He referred to the Iranian regime as unjust. I mean, I imagine those will probably come over time. He's only been poking about a year, right, right, But but you know, when when you hear of some sort of terrorist attack that happens wherever, wherever, that will be in the months and years ahead, I mean I would. Imagine he's got a condept condemn that.

You've got some talent coming out of you know these you know, these young people who are providing content that's getting eyeballs. Yeah, and a lot of eyeballs. Last weekend we had two of the top five movies were based on original YouTube content, of that being back Rooms and The Amazing Digital Circus the Last Act, and there are a couple of things I want to say about it. I think it's significant in that the gatekeepers have lost the plot, right.

1:28:00 You know, you see traditional Hollywood jumping up and down, angry and pouting that you know, people don't want to go see their retreads anymore. But the reality is you have people who are creating content that is engaging with a fan base. And I believe that The Amazing Digital Circus, one of the episodes on YouTube has been viewed like four hundred and seventy five million times, and so even if you haven't heard of it, a lot of people have. And so I think it speaks to the democratization of the entertainment industry. I think the technology that's available now means that, you know, somebody sitting at home on their computer has the ability to do things that only a studio could have done fifteen years ago.

1:28:50 Right, exactly, Yeah, amazing, Well, and the thing is going to be interesting. It's almost like the way the music industry. Yes, right, that's exactly right. It's how Justin b Justin Bieber came on the scene. They said, hey, look at the numbers that this guy's attracting. Maybe we should sign him to a contract. But you know, it'll be interesting because that was then. This is now where you know, these YouTubers and these people are I mean, look at the numbers the back room did I mean, what was eighty four million or something like that that it did. Yeah, that's I think. Yeah, it's up to this point, it's done two hundred and twenty million, and so we're in like, you know, those of us of a certain tender age will remember the Blair Witch Project, you know, and there's sort of a long, rich history of these incredibly cheap independent horror movies, you know, breaking out to one thousand x returns, right, and this is the latest example. It's not like this has never happened before. But you know, at the same time, you've got the Mandalorian and Grogu, you've got Star Wars from Disney. I mean, arguably, you could make the case that it's the biggest studio in the biggest brand and it's totally tank. Now it's tank to the tune of one hundred and fifty eight million dollars domestically, which might sound like a lot of money, but the thing probably costs between two and three hundred million. And you say, okay, well it's close to breaking Well, no, it's not, because studios typically split ticket prices fifty to fifty with theaters.

1:30:19 So if a movie costs two hundred million, it's got to make four hundred million, plus there's marketing, which can sometimes be another one hundred million. So they're estimating that Mandalorian and Grogu's break even spot was probably around six hundred million dollars and it's not even going to make three hundred million, you know, all together, even when you put domestic returns in. And so yeah, I think it speaks to fatigue, and it speaks to the lack of creativity, and people are just tired, but they will spend their money on something that they perceive to be engaging and original and new. Now, having said all that, there's always a coat, right, you know. The number one movie last weekend was Scary Movie, which was actually the sixth movie in this franchise, and it made like eighty five million dollars as a hardcore R rated movie. So I kind of speak out of both sides of my mouth. On one hand, I would say fans are tired of some of the same old sequels and retreads, and by the same token, they still get a foothold too, So it's kind of both. And but certainly we're seeing times change in terms of who can create content and command you know, viewer's eyeballs.

1:31:35 Well, it's interesting because this is going to open up a whole new portal. It's opening up any whole new portal, you know, for creativity. And you know, so you just think, okay, with these young people who have some sense and some you know, realm of independence, are they going to be brought into you know, a major operation like Disney that's going to tell them, you know, when and how high to jump? Right now? I think that's a great question. And again we have a double edged sword with all sorts of content creation. We know from polls over the last ten years that becoming a content creator in some of these surveys is now the number one career aspiration for a lot of young people today. And I think that there is this sense that it's achievable, that all you have to do is go viral. But the flip side of that is every day there's more competition, right, and so whether you are an unknown content creator or whether you're Disney, everybody is creating content and there's more and more every day competing for the same excuse me, the same eyeballs, and so your odds as a content creator today aren't what they were in twenty ten, right, I mean, you've got a lot more competition, and so it's possible that you break through and find an audience. But it's also possible that you know, just like your dream of being a rock star, an actor or you know, the starting point

1:33:07 guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, it's probably not going to happen. So both of those things are true simultaneously, I think. Right exactly. And you know, for those of us of faith, we just say, look at I want to do what God calls me to do. That's right, and if He blesses me and causes me to rise to that level, then it must be for his glory. Right, That's exactly right. And I think that as we help our kids, especially try to navigate that it doesn't mean that we that we say no, but it does mean that we have a responsibility as parents to try to help them navigate well. What is it that is attractive to you here? Because I think that they have grown up in a world in which the instant affirmation of likes and clicks is the currency of self worth, and we know that our identity is based on something deeper than that, and we want to help them establish that foundation for themselves.

1:34:03 Yes, hopefully, let's talk disclosure day. Yeah, I mean this is going to be a big movie. It would be big regardless of what the box office is. This is Steven Spielberg's fifth alien movie, if you're keeping scored at home. The first one, of course, was Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which came out Man almost fifty years ago. Bro, who had it? Feels old? Who feels old? Only five decades ago? Okay, it's weird. My knees and my fingers hurt this morning. I don't know why. Oh wait, I'm old. So this is a movie that sort of pulls from the headlines directly, and we're getting all this news about you know, the US government has been tracking aliens for fifty years? Is it true?

1:34:48 Is it not true? Is it credible? Is there evidence? All of that is sort of the backdrop here, and so this movie imagines a sort of shadowy para governmental organization called WARDEX that knows that aliens are real, but they want to keep a lid on that. And so there's a guy who used to work for ward X who wants to kind of blow the lid off of that. And then Emily Blunt plays a weather woman at a Kansas City TV TV station who essentially sort of gets chosen by the aliens to be one of their representatives. And so this is a movie in which they are trying to make the truth of alien presence known. You know, it kind of goes back to the X Files. The truth is out there, and the WARDEX people want to keep, you know, keep all of it under wraps and make sure that they control the power of things. So there's a lot of spiritual stuff in the movie. Steven Spielberg obviously is Jewish, and interestingly enough, one of the reviews I read from Brett McCracken talks about how they're parallels with the Exodus story, that the aliens kind of choose these two humans to be their representatives, and he makes a really interesting case that Spielberg is trying to talk about transcendence in God in this sort of you know structure.

1:36:20 Now. Having said that, the movie itself asked the question, if aliens showed up, what is that going to do to people's faith? And I think that's an interesting question. I think the movie's answer is pretty muddled, and unless you're really paying attention, I'm not sure you're going to jump to the exodus story as you know what Spielberg is actually trying to do here. So I think there's potential for this to spark conversation. I also think there is potential, if you're not thinking critically about it, for some believers potentially to have confusion over it, or for it to be a negative influence spiritually. Yeah. I think that's a good question. You know, what impact would this have on your faith if all of a sudden, you know, an alien comes knocking at your door?

Yeah, Well, and even with the news that we have already had, I think it's a salient question, even apart from what Steven Spielberg is doing with this movie, because the news stories are everywhere, and so how do we think about that theologically? And Steven Spielberg kind of teases the question without really I think, fully answering it, although you know, we get we get aliens sort of in the place of God here. You know, it has sort of an alien Judeo Christian vibe to it. Which again, is the glass half full or half empty? Well, the answer might be yes, yes, right. And.

1:37:48 I'm sure you know somehow I feel like Spielberg is not going to necessarily, you know, be overt about aliens becoming you know, the new Messiah or something. Right right, Well, it's like so many things, it depends on your frame of reference. And I think it will be there for people to see if they want to. But if that's not your frame of reference, and in an increasingly biblically illiterate culture, yes, I guess says most people aren't going to have that frame of reference. So right there you go. Well, especially in light of everything else that's happening around the world, particularly in the Middle East. Right yeah, you know, because I had some friends going, you know, what should I watch out for? I said, it's always the same, you know, you keep your eyes out for Israel, right.

The Jewish people are that God's chosen people, and so we have to figure out where does that fit in the whole prophetic timeline and the different theologians answer that question differently, But I don't think we can get away from the fact that it's of critical importance, no. And so the thing is is that I think we're built, We're designed. God designed us in a way that begs if I might say, for a relationship, we need that connection. So it really forms across because vertically is you know, the vertical pillar that goes up to him and the horizontal goes out to others in our orbit. And whenever that's out of whack, we may not even realize, because Jeff, it can be so subtle, but it's enough to kind of turn our world topsy turvy and confuse us. Right, Yeah, my.

1:46:46 Wife and er benefiting on Sunday from a sermon by Pastor Tim Calwell at our church and Little Rock, and he basically taught on Jonathan and David from the Testament passages about their friendship which lasted for ten years during their late teens to late twenties. And this was mostly during the time when David was yet to be king but was supposed to be the king by prediction, but Jonathan was the one in line as the natural heir to be the next king after his father saw and Tim pointed out some things about their friendship. First of all, they had a deep bond and affection for each other. Secondly, they expressed it. They used their words to say you're important to me. Thirdly, they made a covenant vow of loyalty and commitment. And fourth, David took off his chest protector peace, and his belt and he gave his sword and all of that to Jonathan, his friend. He gave some of his most valuable weapons to his friend. Now, you wouldn't expect a friend to immediately hurt you with the sword. But if you think of your honesty and your disclosure and your story and who you really are, your weaknesses and faults, your fears, if you give that to a friend, you're taking a risk. Right, they could they could burn you with it. They could hurt you with it, they could look down on you maybe with it, or if they still accept you, it booies you and

1:48:19 strengthens you, and you are even less weak in those areas because you're being honest with them. So that was a great example that you take the valuable things of who you really are and give them to your friend. And then the other thing he pointed out was that Jonathan was so humble he lifted up his friend David and supported David becoming the next king over himself. Right, he knew that was his best interest that's amazing. Well, it's huge. And the thing is it's revelatory. You know he got Jonathan, I believe got that message from God because it was it was prophesied that David was to be king. Now, whether or not Jonathan was fully aware of that, I don't think the Bible clears that up necessarily, but his actions demonstrate. See, we can always look at the fruit, just like you pointed out, look at the fruit of one's belief in their worldview. His worldview was such that he was very humble, He was very I get yielding to his friend and to a higher calling that in and of his flesh. Anybody else would have said, heck, no, man, it's good to be king.

1:49:36 I'm in line. It's mine and you rethroughout the Bible time and again, even when Solomon became king, his brother wanted to be king. Right, Yeah, Jonathan, he saw David defeat Goliath, and instead of being jealous, he saw that God's hand was on this man. That was an anointing on David, and he supported it. Right. And then, even though you said he was humble and meek and and submitted to David's future king role, Jonathan was courageous his heck, he stood up to his dad. His dad threw a spear at him because he was so angry at David, and he was angry at Jonathan for being friends with David. And David stood up to his dad and said, David doesn't mean harmed by you. He's a good man. Don't go after him, dad, And then he went and protected him. So all that is really amazing.

1:50:26 But think of this. David became a great king, but he was vulnerable when he didn't have his friend Jonathan. Jonathan wasn't alive anymore. At the point at which David let the army go out soldiering and he didn't go with him, he stayed in isolation back at the palace. And that's when the temptation to look at Bethsheba and then steal her and then get her husband killed. All that happened when he didn't have his friends. So the bottom line that Pastor Tim gave us was get committed to your friendships and spend an hour. He spends one hour every week in a deep conversation about his life and his friend's life with other friends. That's exactly what I do. In the verbi call huddling, right, and I do with two other guys.

1:51:12 But Tim made it so simple. Do you talk for forty five minutes an hour every week about what's important in your life with your closest friend or two? And I can help men and women do that, although I tailor a lot of my language to men at Menhull, But that's my takeaway. Commit to a friend, ask God who it should be, maybe a couple, and then spend thirty minutes, forty minutes, maybe an hour every week, put it on the calendar, and talk about everything important in your life exactly. You know, when I was growing up, particularly in my age, maybe a little bit in yours because I'm a little bit older than you, Jeff, you know, the slogan was get real man, It's time to get real, right, And I think that in your generation you had something similar to that as well. But here it's interesting that has not receded. The need for reality is still there, and we're being presented a false God through AI and all these other channels, and it's like, okay, there's an exchange here.

It's more amusement, which means without your mind, or you can invest it with other men and do something of value that will catapult you in the direction of your destiny. So it's your choice, right. Yeah, it's entertainment, it's scrolling, it's distraction, it's numbing yourself, which leads to isolation and more loneliness. Yes, or it's actual, real relationship. And I think the word relationship is not as robust for men as a core friend you know, as a brother, a teammate, And I call it intentional friendship.
